The Dunedin City Council has called for expressions of interest for detailed designs of a planned single-storey car park with an artificial sand-based turf surface on the building's roof, beside Harbour Tce.
The turf would be used for football and hockey in the winter, and tennis in the summer.
Council community and recreation services manager Mick Reece said the council had preliminary funding to acquire designs for the building, beside Harbour Tce.
He wanted to see what companies would be interested in delivering an innovative design for the facility.
This facility would replace the old cricket pavilion at the western side of Logan Park, beside the bowling club, which was well past its use-by date.
Mr Reece said the council had put aside $12 million for the park redevelopment three years ago, and was looking at spending about $6 million for this project.
He declined to reveal the expected cost of the design project, citing commercial sensitivity.
The Logan Park redevelopment had been stalled for a couple of years because of the debate over the Awatea St stadium.
As there was a bit more certainty about the stadium project, Mr Reece said the council could have another look at Logan Park.
The Otago Hockey Association had made a submission to the council's annual plan, saying it needed another turf, as its sand-based turf was in a poor state.
Mr Reece said other work on Logan Park could not be done until a decision was made on what to do about the old art gallery building.
The design of the new Logan Park had the old art gallery demolished, along with neighbouring ancillary buildings.
But the New Zealand Historic Places Trust has upgraded the status of the art gallery building, to category one, making it difficult to demolish.
The redevelopment of the park would also include the replacement of existing tennis courts with courts over on the Harbour Tce side of the park.
The Academy of Sport and the Otago Highlanders would be housed in a new building beside the Caledonian running track.
