Southern writers in the spotlight

One of the Southern Heritage Trust's recent projects is a series of talks and readings on Dunedin writers.

The Hear Our Writers series can be downloaded from the website as podcasts, and are available on CD as well.

It started with a desire to create a project linked to the Dunedin Public Library centenary last year, according to Barbara Frame, one of the organisers.

They initially considered a guided walk around sites associated with writers, but they decided there were already many guided walks in the city.

A chance remark about the "iPod generation" set them off in another direction, and they decided to produce short audio clips on about 11 Dunedin writers, along with brief readings of their work.

Where possible they have used recordings of writers reading their own work.

The organisers hope it will whet people's interest and encourage them to visit libraries and bookshops.

Writers range from 19th-century poets such as John Barr, Charles Thatcher and Thomas Bracken, through to 20th-century writers A. H. Reed, Ruth Dallas, Janet Frame, James K. Baxter, Charles Brasch, Hone Tuwhare, Roger Hall and Cilla McQueen.

The second phase of the project is to produce a printed guide to literary sites around the city.

Some, like the Fortune and Globe theatres and the University of Otago, have been associated with several writers, Mrs Frame said.
