Police question pizza delivery driver about abduction

Language difficulties with a pizza delivery man abducted in Auckland are prolonging police inquiries into the attack.

The 60-year-old man was abducted about 3pm yesterday while making at delivery suburban Howick, bundled into his boot and driven around for two hours before being released.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Gutrie said the man had answered a call to deliver a pizza to a Vincent St address, but when he arrived the residents knew nothing of the order.

On his way back to his car he was attacked by three men who took the pizzas and his wallet before putting him in the car. They fled on foot after releasing the man.

Mr Gutrie said police had to interview the victim through his daughter as he was an Italian with little English.

It meant they were unsure where the man was dropped off.

"He's very shaken but able to talk to us and doesn't appear to be seriously injured."

Mr Gutrie said it was uncommon for the victim in such a case to be kidnapped and taken away in his own car.

A description of the offenders has yet to be released.
