$5.6m price of stadium land

The University of Otago will pay a total of $5.602 million for land next to the Forsyth Barr stadium, the university council has been told.

The council has already paid the Dunedin City Council $5.34 million in progress payments.

The amount of its final contribution was to be agreed once the exact area of land the university required and its value were determined.

A capital works report tabled at this week's university council meeting said the final payment would be $264,000 and would be paid in October this year, bringing the total cost to $5.602 million.

The university plans to construct a 13,400sq m L-shaped building immediately to the west of the stadium to house several stand-alone activities including Student Health, the Unipol gymnasium, and the foundation studies department, and possibly child-care facilities, research spaces and a cafe.

In April, vice-chancellor Prof David Skegg said the university was considering a two-stage construction project, building the part adjoining the west wall of the stadium first and leaving the rest until after the Rugby World Cup finished in October 2011.
