An albatross, a penguin and a dolphin will soon be making their homes amid the plantings at the Dunedin Railway Station.
The wildlife will feature as part of a new decorative display made from flowers at the railway station's largest garden plot on Anzac Square, beside Anzac Ave.
A variety of pansies would be used to create the images, which would also include flowers in the shape of a Baldwin St road sign, the University of Otago shield and a church.
The flower plots are the work of Delta Utility Services, which holds the Dunedin City Council contract to maintain the garden plots.
Delta contract supervisor Peter Walker said the creative designs were the work of Delta team leader Joneen Chalmers, and were not a condition of the council contract but "something we strive to do".
"We don't specifically have to be creative like that, but the council certainly likes it . . . and so do the public."
Council parks and reserves team leader Martin Thompson said the latest designs were planted last month and would be at their best during August.
They would be removed towards the end of September to make way for a summer planting, which would be in place from October to March, he said.
The council paid $47,000 each year for the plantings outside the Railway Station, spread across four plots totalling 866sq m.
Other plots were scattered across the city, including the Albany St plot rented by community groups to promote themselves and their causes.
"It's one of those feel-good areas, really. We get a lot of positive comments from people [about] them," Mr Thompson said.
