Day for rugby families

More than 400 children will play rugby and then have a chance to meet some of their rugby heroes - including a former All Black - at the Kurow junior rugby family day tomorrow.

Along with parents, supporters and administrators, the Meridian-sponsored event, being held for the third time, has in previous years attracted more than 1000 people to Kurow.

The day starts at 10.20am when 34 primary school rugby teams from throughout North Otago play and concludes with the Kurow v Maheno senior match in the afternoon.

Junior players will have a chance to meet some North Otago rugby stars, as well as former All Black Glen Osborne.

North Otago Rugby Football Union chief executive Colin Jackson said that, while the union was one of the smallest in New Zealand, it was also one of the most successful.

Rugby development was a major focus for the region and support from Meridian helped develop young players, he said.

Meridian has been involved with North Otago rugby since 2002 and renewed its sponsorship for a further three years in 2008.
