Short Film Otago, a Dunedin-based trust which receives its funding from the Community Trust of Otago, makes three films a year, but none had been made out of North Otago, spokesman Richard Thomas said.
To try to rectify that, a short film-writing workshop will be held in Oamaru on July 4 and 5, led by Australian scriptwriter Billy Marshall Stoneking.
Veteran humorist, author, columnist and Waitaki district councillor Jim Hopkins is organising the workshop locally.
Mr Thomas said Mr Hopkins had a long history of writing good scripts and he was writing for the television series Close to Home when the pair first met.
Three short films were recently shown at Oamaru Movie World, the first time the premiere had been held outside Dunedin.
They were later shown in Dunedin and Alexandra.
All three were written by people who went to Mr Marshall Stoneking's workshop in Dunedin last year.
On the Friday before the writing workshop, he will take a half-day workshop for the three Oamaru secondary schools, based at Waitaki Boys High School.
