Concerns were raised at a Cromwell Community Board meeting in the town this week, at which members considered submissions on the Central Otago District Council's Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP).
A total of 93 submissions related to issues within the Cromwell ward, some of which mentioned the need for additional or upgraded public toilet facilities.
One of two submitters to give a vocal submission at the meeting, Bob Galvin told members there needed to be public toilets at the northern end of Cromwell where many people went for recreation.
"I have seen and been told about excrement and associated paper being found among the lupins in some places around there, north of the yacht club.
It's obviously too far for some people to hold on to the town facilities, so there is a need for public toilets up that north end," he said.
Mr Galvin, who appeared on behalf of the Cromwell Community Plan Committee, said a lot of money had been spent promoting Cromwell, and it seemed "a bit silly to come up short on delivery".
A written submission from Cromwell resident and business owner Gary Anderson addressed the need for better toilet facilities in town.
Mr Anderson's submission called for upgraded Lode Lane toilets, which are situated near the Cromwell Mall shopping centre and car park.
Board chairman Neil Gillespie said public toilets would be included within a new visitor information centre planned to be built close by.
In the meantime, people would have to "make do" with the existing amenity block in Lode Lane, he said.
"Like hell" Mr Anderson told the Otago Daily Times.
"We can't wait for the information centre, because by the time that's finished we'll be into next century.
The toilets should stay where they are and be upgraded, as they service the mall and buses which stop right outside," he said.
