Cromwell Golf Club members should know in August whether the club can proceed with a planned redevelopment of its course, following anticipated land sales in Cromwell's commercial and industrial sectors.
Golfer Greg Turner has helped the club design an upgrade of facilities, which they say will put the course among top golfing destinations in New Zealand.
The Cromwell Community Board agreed to grant $700,000 to the course redevelopment through the Central OtagoDistrict Council's long-term council community plan (LTCCP).
At a meeting of the board in Cromwell this week, members considered 53 submissions relating to its plan to help fund the golf course project.
Widespread support for the proposal convinced board members to proceed with the plan, pending land sales in the Cromwell area.
Chairman Neil Gillespie told the Otago Daily Times the board had sections for sale in Cromwell's commercial Sargood development and the McNulty Rd industrial area.
If those properties sold as anticipated, the money would be allocated to the golf club's project, he said.
The LTCCP was scheduled to be approved by the council on June 24, after which it would become operative on July 1.
All going well, the community board could then inform the golf club whether it had money available for the development, Mr Gillespie said.
An August board meeting would provide an opportunity for the golf club to present members with its final development plans as requested, he said.
"Then we can respond, depending on our financial position. If we've got the money available, which is expected, we can inform the club accordingly," Mr Gillespie said.
District council property manager Mike Kerr said a conditional contract was in place for one of the four Sargood sections, while unconditional contracts were in place for two of the seven McNulty Rd sections.
Cromwell Golf Club general manager Graham Mercer said the club was delighted funding for its project had been approved to this stage and members were looking forward to advancing the development.
