Alhambra-Union proved too big and too strong in the forwards for Green Island, to run away with a comfortable 33-12 victory at Peter Johnstone Park.
The Alhambra-Union pack were full of momentum throughout and, but for a high error rate and kicker Peter Breen landing just two goals from six attempts and Jone Paumau one from two, the scoreline could possibly have reflected a good old-fashioned thrashing for Green Island.
Alhambra-Union was inspired by its captain Matt Clutterbuck and fellow loose forwards Mana Faraimo and Wahari Waitohi.
All three displayed speed to defend out wide and were masterful at turning the ball over at the breakdown.
Lock Cowan Finch was supreme at the line-out, and the front row trio of Dane Maraki, Ben Pereira and Scott Mason showed speed around the field and to the breakdown.
In the back, Breen had some game-breaking touches from fullback and his 70m burst up field early in the second half, led to Karne Hesketh scoring a second try.
Green Island was kicked into life by Dean Moeahu coming on for the final 30min, ultimately leading to it scoring two tries.
But the pick of the Green Island side was its first five-eighth Anthony Harris, who was tenacious in tackling and in general play.
Alhambra-Union 33 (Karne Hesketh (2), Wayne Gibson (2), Matt George tries; Peter Breen 2 penalty goals; Jone Paumau 1 conversion), Green Island 12 (Shannon Young, Sam Collins tries; Tino Elisara conversion).
Half-time: Alhambra-Union 16-0.
Referee: Dave Kennedy.
