A-League football is coming to Queenstown this winter, with the announcement of a pre-season match between the Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory as part of the 2009 Queenstown Winter Festival.
The match at the Queenstown Events Centre on June 27 will mark the Phoenix's South Island debut.
Lakes Leisure event manager Karen Gemmell said the atmosphere promised to be "electric", with Phoenix supporters expected to come from all over the South Island as well as Wellington.
While there was a chance snow would affect the game, Ms Gemmell said a postponement day had been set aside for June 28.
The only thing which might be affected by weather was a planned children's sporting clinic, depending on the airlines' ability to fly the players in on schedule.
The clinic, on June 26, would give primary school children and high school pupils the opportunity to participate in a special session with the Phoenix.
Tickets for the game go on sale from Monday, available through TicketDirect, at the Queenstown Events Centre, i-Site, or by phoning (03) 450 9005 or online at www.ticketdirect.co.nz.
Kick-off for the match is 2.30pm.
