The Crucifixion of Christ was commemorated yesterday, Good Friday.
Three ecumenical processions of the cross were held in Dunedin and Mosgiel.
About 20 people attended the procession in Mosgiel.
A cross was carried from the Holy Cross Centre to St Luke's Anglican Church.
About 20 people also attended the procession in Waverley, where a cross was carried from St Alphonsus' Church to St Nicholas' Anglican Church.
And a crowd of about 50 attended the procession in Northeast Valley.
They walked with a cross that was being carried along North Rd from the Northeast Valley Baptist Church.
The Northeast Valley procession swelled to about 200 as the procession moved through the Dunedin Botanic Garden.
Dramatic presentations were held in the gardens.
These included a presentation of Veronica running up to Jesus and swabbing the sweat and blood from his brow.
And a mock mugging was staged, to highlight the value of compassion.
The mugging culminated at the band rotunda in a re-enactment, by members of the Pacific Island Church, of the crucifixion of Christ.
For Christians celebrating Easter, the procession is a visual reminder of Jesus carrying his cross through the streets of Jerusalem, as was a Roman custom for the condemned. Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, "Place of the Skull".
