Former Columba College pupil Anna Fields is one of three nationwide to receive an Edna Waddell Undergraduate Scholarship for Women in Technology and Engineering.
The awards, worth $5000 towards first-year study, were offered for the first time this year to encourage wider participation by women in the technological professions.
Miss Fields, now a first-year engineering student at Canterbury University, also won an IPENZ foundation scholarship worth $5000 and a Canterbury University emerging leaders, women in engineering award, worth $5000.
Her time at Columba College inspired her to pursue engineering, she said.
"When I started doing physics in Year 11, I thought it was going to be really boring but I had a really brilliant physics teacher, and really liked it."
She received her award at the Canterbury University 2009 scholarship awards presentation, which was held last week in Christchurch.
Scholarships valued at more than $760,000 were presented to 196 students from around New Zealand who had embarked on their first year of tertiary study at the university.
Others from Otago awarded were -Andrew Dickie of Otago Boys High School, Stephanie Donaldson of Waitaki Girls High School, Sarah Fitzpatrick of St Kevins College, and Lisa Hall of South Otago High School, who received Canterbury University dux scholarships which paid up to $5000 towards tuition fees.
Kathryn Darling of St Hildas Collegiate School received a Canterbury University emerging leaders scholarship for all-round excellence; Adam Lill of St Kevins College received a Canterbury University emerging leaders scholarship forest engineering award; and Arthur Milne of Waitaki Boys High School received a Canterbury University emerging leaders scholarship Maori award.
Each scholarship was worth $5000.
Alice Robertson of Waitaki Girls High School received a $5000 College of Arts scholarship; and Stephanie Green of Otago Girls High School received a $1000 College of Engineering scholarship.
