Otago Maori teams enjoyed an unbeaten weekend at the Te Waipounamu tournament in Timaru.

The men's, women's and colts sides all had victories, with the women's and men's sides coming back with silverware.

The colts bounced back from not having a team last year, to beat Southland 14-0 in their first game on Saturday.

They backed that up with a 17-5 win over last year's champion, Canterbury.

Unfortunately for the Otago Maori Colts, Marlborough also won its two games and won by two points on points differential, ahead of Otago.

Michael Mikaere was player of the day for the Colts while Chris Brun, Ben Qauqau, Nick Tupaea, Jamie Brown, Rawiri Tapiata, Jamie Williams and Tom Franklin made the South Island team.

The men's side had a narrow 12-3 win over Southland, with Dan Snee kicking four penalty goals.

Against defending champions Tasman, winger Karne Hesketh scored two tries and Snee added two conversions and a penalty goal in the 17-5 win.

Jed Vercoe, Wiremu Ruru, Hami Goldsmith, Corey Kara, Snee, Doug Edwards and Hesketh were all picked in the South Island team.

The women's side had a narrow win over Southland, with the game going to extra time.

Otago scored two tries in the additional 10 minutes to win the match.

In the final against Canterbury, an all-round effort led to Otago winning 27-15.

Playing 10-a-side, Otago had superior fitness, with many of the side backing up after playing in a sevens tournament the night before.

Ngamamae Ropata, Kathleen Whilton, Ana Capree-Parata, Janna Vaughan, Ashley Hooper, Angela Taylor were all picked for the South Island team while sisters Gemma and Jess Tuhega were picked as reserves.

Carla Hohepa and Jesse Hanna-Brennan were named in the South Island team despite not playing in the tournament.
