A link to the timetable on the Otago Regional Council website (www.orc.govt.nz) allows people with a screen-reader program to access the bus timetable and route information.
Mr Allen said the new format would make a big difference for blind people using buses, making it easier for them to get around town. Previously, they had to rely on a phone system, which was unreliable after-hours.
"Having access to the timetable is the first step. We're very pleased the council has taken this initiative and included us in the development so we can all be sure what they were doing was the right thing."
Council policy and resource planning committee chairman Cr Michael Deaker said the move was part of the council's ongoing GoBus programme of improvements to Dunedin's public transport.
"The blind community requested this development and it has been a complex undertaking to convert all the information in our bus timetables to a screen-reader accessible format, but it is a very worthwhile thing for us to do," Cr Deaker said.
Members of the association provided advice for regional council staff developing the site and tested its functionality.
Mr Allen now hopes the council will consider audio announcements at bus stops.
The new format contains all the timetable information and also describes the routes buses take.
