Walks grow in popularity

Otago Settlers Museum organisers are "surprised and delighted" with the growing popularity of their Walk Dunedin guided walks, despite the adverse effect of tougher economic times on some tourism-related activities elsewhere.

More than 90% of the walk participants are overseas tourists.

Val-mai Shaw, who co-ordinates volunteer guides for the three daily walks, which leave the Dunedin Visitor Centre at 9.30am, 11am and 2pm, said 177 people had taken part last month.

This was a January record, well up (by 58%) on Walk Dunedin numbers the previous January (112 ), she said.

John Ingram, the museum visitor programmes co-ordinator, said visitors enjoyed having a walk and talking to the guides, and some had opted to save money by paying directly, rather than booking through an agent.
