A Dunedin cat which found a warm spot to sleep in - the engine bay of a car - yesterday got an unexpected ride to a nearby garage, leaving the mechanic who found it amazed it had survived the experience with "all its bits".

The car's driver said he heard meowing in his garage but failed to find any sign of a cat. When he started driving the car, the man heard the meowing again.

After driving for a short distance, he pulled into Mike Teasdale Motors in Kaikorai Valley Rd, whose owner, Mike Teasdale, hoisted up the car and discovered a small, shaking kitten tucked into the inner mudguard near the air-conditioning pump.

"I was surprised it had all its bits," Mr Teasdale said. The driver was also amazed.

He was going to take the feline to the SPCA before garage staff member Bianca Whalan said she had been wanting a kitten "for ages".

And so Miss Whalan became the proud owner of the as yet unnamed kitten. It might seem obvious, but perhaps we could suggest Lucky?
