Resort decision next month

One of the developers behind the proposed $300 million Gibbston Valley Station (GVS) resort does not know what more the company can do to ensure the success of the project.

GVS managing director Greg Hunt said he was expecting the decision from independent commissioners David Collins, Andrew Henderson and Queenstown Lakes district councillor Leigh Overton "sometime in February".

The decision would follow the three-day resource consent hearing in Queenstown in mid-December.

"It was a well presented application. We had the support of the community and 10 or 11 members spoke in support. We'll wait and see."

Mr Hunt said if the resort was given the all-clear, GVS would consider what conditions would be part of the approval, then continue finalising plans and promoting the project.

If declined, the company would have to review the reasons why and assess its next move, he said.

Mr Hunt said GVS had spent two years in consultation with the Gibbston community and the proposed resort was within character zone criteria.

He said the company did not have bank debt and was in a position to proceed.

If approval was granted, the earliest construction would start would be 2010.

Construction would employ 50 to 100 workers on site and was programmed to take five to 10 years to complete.

The station would employ more than 100 workers once finished, with staff accommodation part of the proposal.

A total of 30 public submissions were received by the deadline of August 13.

Up to 25 were in support, five were in opposition and 14 said they wished to be heard.
