Stampede coach Adam Blanchette is staying true to his roots as a top defenceman.

His Queenstown-based reigning national ice hockey champions demolished Dunedin Thunder in back-to-back games at Queenstown Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday.

Young hot-shot Callum Burns scored a hat-trick in Friday's 5-2 victory.

Not to be outdone, towering captain Matt Schneider scored his own hat-trick as Thunder were put to the sword 7-1 on Saturday.

But Blanchette said it was the defensive performance that pleased him most.‘‘Look around the league, a lot of the games are wide open, high-scoring shoot-outs.

"So from a coaching point of view, I'm proud of how we committed to team defence and so are the boys.

"The forwards are getting back, the ‘D' playing ‘D', everyone's pulling on the same rope.''

Import Jade Portwood scored Stampede's first on Friday, short-handed in the first period.

Schneider doubled the lead early in the second, before a hammer shot from 19-year-old forward Burns.

Thunder's Finnish player Otto Sillanpaa matched Burns with an arrowed shot into the top corner past Aston Brookes just before the break.

But Burns scored his second seven minutes into the third period, before capping a quality performance with another just a minute later.

Gareth Lloyd managed a consolation goal for his new team Dunedin Thunder on a power play.

Blanchette said everyone expects a big season from Burns, with one national title already to his name.

"It's his year to pop up and embrace the opportunity.

"It's great to see him getting the pay-off after all the hard work he's put in over the years.

"It shows the imports are raising the standards of the local youngsters.''

The Stampede ran out to a four-goal lead in the first period on Saturday, with two goals from Mike McRae, another snipe from Burns, and one from Schneider.

The Thunder came out roaring in the second and pressed the Stampede back.

Sillanpaa and birthday-boy captain Connor Harrison went close but could not find a way past goalkeeper Aston Brookes.

Goals from Schneider and Portwood within the final two minutes of the hard-fought period sucked the energy out of the visitors.

Schneider then scored again in the third before a consolation to Ryan Grushka.

Late on, former Stampede captain Bert Haines and Thunder's Garcia Meeuws went to the bin for roughing, facing off after Haines was barged from behind.

The Stampede is now four without loss, the Thunder four without a win.
