Racing: Wynne straight back into it

There is a good reason why Samantha Wynne has not added to her lead in the South Island apprentice jockeys' premiership before today's Oamaru Jockey Club meeting at Oamaru.

Wynne (27) has not been seen on raceday since Te Rapa on April 30, as she returned to her native Ireland for a holiday.

"I literally just spent time with the family,'' Wynne said.

"It was great and I surprised my mum, which was nice.

"It's good to be back and get straight back into it.''

Straight into it is about right. Wynne has eight rides today, as she looks to build on her 48 wins for the season - eight more than her nearest South Island rival, Krishna Mudhoo (40), and 15 behind the country's leading apprentice, Shaun McKay (63).

Mudhoo is going on holiday next week, so Wynne should have the South Island title in the bag.

"I would like to still have a crack at Shaun but I'll just see how the first few meetings go.''

Porotene Rippa is a good way for Wynne's day to start when she climbs aboard the mare in race 1.

Wynne guided the Danny Crozier-trained mare to fourth at Timaru last month, just half a length behind winner Lucky To Be Cool.

"She went to Blenheim after that and went one good race there, but Danny said he shouldn't have backed her up the second day.''

Porotene Rippa's run for second over 1950m on the first day at Blenheim suggests she should handle the 22200m.

"He's been easy on her since but I galloped her yesterday and she went really well.''

Beauty Ace is Wynne's best chance of the day in a rating 65 1600m which is light on form.

Wynne rode the son of Swiss Ace to seventh at Riccarton last month before he finished fifth at Ashburton two weeks ago, although she was happy enough with his Riccarton effort.

"He was fresh up and the two leaders went 20 lengths in front so I led the rest of the pack,'' she said.

"He blew out the last 200m which he was entitled to. I think he's my ride of the day tomorrow.''

Lakota (race 2) drops back from open company at Riccarton to a rating 85 1600m while Shantalia Express (race 5) has trialled well for Riccarton trainer Lance Robinson.

"He said he's very happy with the way it's going, but he's still learning about it himself.''

Champollion (race 4) won a group 3 2yr-old race at Rosehill in April 2013 and was seventh to Guelph in the Australian Sires Produce Stakes a week later.

"So you would like to think if he put his best foot forward, he would smash that lot, but he just hasn't been in form of late.''

Stralis (race 6) and Graffiti are both each-way chances, while Our Madonna (race 7) is one to follow out of today's race.

"She's a nice filly that I like to think is going places.''

Jockey Chris Johnson has been stood down from his rides at Oamaru today pending a Judicial Control Authority hearing after he returned a positive test to cannabis at the Rangiora trials on Wednesday.
