Children at Oamaru's Ardgowan School have been gearing up for the Oamaru Fire and Steam festival, which starts on June 3, by making bird masks.
Tourism Waitaki described the annual event as a way for the community to celebrate fire, steam, music, sound and light.
Local artist Donna Demente was at the school yesterday to teach the pupils how to make bird masks.
Ms Demente said the exercise was one of the mask-making classes she was running for both adults and children for the festival.
