A Mosgiel man killed in action in France on November 9, 1918, just two days short of Armistice Day, is featured in a new book about residents of the town who died in World War 1.

Donald Kennedy was one of 60 Mosgiel men who lost their lives during the war.

The book was put together by the WWI project team of the Mosgiel branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. Born in Mosgiel on March 25, 1893, to John and Mary Jane Stewart, Mr Kennedy had five brothers and three sisters, all of the children being educated at East Taieri Primary School.

Mr Kennedy was a clerk at Dunedin general store Butterworth Brothers before enlisting to fight in World War 1 as a 22-year-old in November 1915.

He served in France and Belgium during 1916-18 before being killed in action on November 9, 1918, a mere two days before the signing of the armistice, which brought hostilities to a close. Mr Kennedy was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Copies of the new book are available for reference purposes at the Mosgiel RSA, Mosgiel and Hocken libraries, Toitu Otago Settlers Museum and Taieri College.
