Racha Cuneen is already a popular jockey with southern trainers.

But those trainers might be hard-pressed to steal Cuneen away from He's Gold if co-trainer Danny Champion has his way.

Cuneen has teamed up with the son of My Halo five times, winning three of them, including yesterday's win at the Beaumont Racing Club's meeting at Wingatui, and running third on the other two occasions

‘‘I don't know what it is with Racha, but he just gets them to settle,'' Champion said.

‘‘Everyone else that has been on him, he just runs and goes.''

He's Gold had shown Champion and training partner Kezia Murphy the potential to race at least over a 1600m journey, but dropped back from a 1400m win at Ashburton earlier this month to a 1200m victory in rating 75 company yesterday.

‘‘I thought he would go a mile [1600m] but last season he got up and trucking. But he's a lot better now.''

Champion does not expect the 5yr-old to race much longer this season as the late autumn draws near.

‘‘He's no good on anything worse than dead. He's got to have it pretty good. We'll pick a race out for him then put him out.''

 ● Wingatui trainer Terry Kennedy admits he is slightly late to the party with Macy this season.

But Kennedy will certainly take a 1200m maiden win as a nice consolation prize for the daughter of Darci Brahma before she takes a break.

Macy just downed stablemate Janefield Jewel in yesterday's sprint, which Kennedy believes could be down to Janefield Jewel missing some work in the lead-up to yesterday's Beaumont meeting.

‘‘It's a pity I didn't have her ready for those 3yr-old fillies races, but I've missed the boat there. She may have one or two more then go out.''

Kennedy expects the 3yr-old will find comfort over a longer trip when she returns next season.

''I think she'll get a mile and a-quarter [2000m]. Her mum [Rough Crossing] won over a mile and a-quarter here. The further she goes, the better she's going to be, but she's got a lot of ability.''

 ● He's Gold and Macy might head to the paddock in the next month or so, but journeys over obstacles could be in Show Maccool's future, co-trainer Peter Corbett said.

Corbett and partner Terrill Charles have raced the Flying Spur gelding since he arrived 12 months ago, following a record of one win from 13 starts in the North Island.

‘‘He digs holes for himself and beats himself, but he put it together there today,'' he said.

‘‘I might jump the bugger yet.''
