Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said there were "a lot of people travelling at this time of year", but no significant incidents had occurred.
Police would continue to push their driving and speeding campaign in coming weeks as they had done over the past month, he said.
Senior Sergeant Olaf Jensen, of Invercargill, said there had been no complaints about traffic leaving the city and vehicle volumes in the area were not large.
"We expect it to pick up in the next few days."
Balclutha police had a similar experience yesterday, while Christmas Day had been "quite busy".
However, while traffic had levelled off, it would build again towards New Year.
