Police have confirmed they have found a body off the Beach Haven Wharf, on Auckland's North Shore.
The find this morning confirmed Kristina Anderson's worst fears. She posted on a community Facebook page this morning that she was expecting the grim news that her father, Rodney, had not survived after jumping into the water last night to rescue a struggling swimmer.
Ms Anderson said she understood her father had plunged in fully clothed and disappeared after helping a friend who got into difficulty off Beach Haven.
The police launch Deodar scoured the Waitemata Harbour from Beach Haven to Greenhithe until 4am today and a shoreline search continued throughout the night, but failed to find the man.
People on the wharf threw in lifebuoys in an effort to help. The Westpac helicopter used its powerful spotlight to search the harbour and the shoreline, and boats and police on foot were also involved.
The swimmer originally in trouble made it out of the water.
A resident posted on a community Facebook page that several primary school boys recently got into trouble in the water at the same spot.
