Melissa Van Der Haegen (11) leads the George Street Normal School kapa haka group in Dunedin's Meridian mall yesterday to promote the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal.
The nearly 100 pupils were watched by about 200 shoppers as they performed waiata, including Patea Maori Club's Poi E.
For the appeal, Christmas gifts for children are collected at Kmart stores until Christmas Eve and given to the Salvation Army to distribute the next day.
Dunedin Corps Captain Andrew Moffatt said, as of yesterday, more than 1200 gifts had been put under the wishing tree in Dunedin.
"Things are going well and we'd like to thank the Dunedin public. People are generally very generous in Otago and if they continue to give generously, that would be good.''
