The Wanaka Ladies Lions Club wants to install an electric barbecue at Bremner Bay but four Aubrey Rd residents are opposing the project, fearing it will encourage rubbish, noise, late night parties, broken glass and create traffic risks.
The Wanaka Community Board yesterday agreed to leave the proposal lying on the table until the board's February meeting.
The board will visit the proposed site this month with a representative of the Lions Club and Queenstown Lakes District Council projects manager Mark Symons.
Mr Symons has recommended the barbecue be placed on a grassed area opposite the Eely Point pump house, on the corner of Lakeside Rd and Aubrey Rd.
This site was close to the toilets and rubbish bins, had good off-street parking and was not in the direct line of sight of local residents looking out to the lake.
Aubrey Rd resident Prue Field said she was opposed to the chosen site because it was closer to her house than the rubbish bins, was at the junction of the Eely Point and Bremner Bay walkways and was too close to the intersection.
Deputy mayor John S. Wilson and board chairman Lyal Cocks asked if the barbecue could be placed further along the Eely Point reserve.
Mr Symons said the Ladies Lions wanted a barbecue in Bremner Bay because it was a shallow swimming beach.
The power supply would be automatically cut off at 11pm, to discourage all-night barbecue parties.
