A group called the Wanaka-Hawea Reserves Trust has been launched to sink plans for a watersports building on the Lake Wanaka foreshore.
Trustee John Coe, of Wanaka, said yesterday the building proposed by the Wanaka Watersports Facility Trust was too big, in the wrong place and spoiled the lakeside walk around Roys Bay.
‘‘That area over there, I don't say it's world famous, but tourist-wise it's our greatest asset. To chop down trees and put in a . . . huge, ugly looking building is just not as it should be.''
Mr Coe said the trust was concerned about preserving all the region's reserves but would be targeting the watersports building in a public campaign as it went through the resource consent process.
The trust was formed to provide organised opposition to the proposal. It had begun advertising its opposition.
‘‘The public have been led to believe [the building] is a done deal. This is certainly not the case.''
