Basketball: BBO seeking general manager

Basketball Otago will make another step towards recovery when it advertises for a general manager this weekend.

Former general manager Markham Brown resigned in June last year following a review into the financial performance of the organisation.

Shortly after his departure, it was revealed BBO had accumulated a huge debt of almost $180,000 and it ceased trading in October, 2014.

Liquidation appeared inevitable but the basketball community rallied, and an agreement to pay 30c in the dollar was reached with creditors in May.

BBO chairman Karl Andrews said the organisation was now in a much better position and would advertise for a manager.

''We are working through that right as we speak,'' he said.

''We hope to have something in the paper this weekend. It has taken a while to get there but we wanted to get it right.''

Andrews said BBO was keeping an open mind about what type of skill set it was looking for.

''There are two ways we can go with the role. One would be very much an administration base which we are quite keen on in terms of skills.''

The other option would be to employ someone with excellent basketball knowledge and ''support that person with the people we've got there at the moment''.

''We do have a general description of what we want but we are keeping it general to see what people are out there. We really are leaving it open.''

Andrews will be joined by Di Carter and Craig Hickford on the appointment panel and the trio hope to have a shortlist together by late November and will make a recommendation to the board in early December.

In the meantime, BBO will launch a new development league this weekend.

''We are trying to bring in everyone from under-13 to under-19 and keep them running over the summer months.

''We have a reasonably good social league that has been going on Wednesday nights but this is more tailored to different age-groups and to give them exposure to our best coaches.''
