If all goes as planned, Fairfield School pupils will have a shiny new school with a new teaching method by next July.
Plans are in the works to construct a new building that will house four classes of senior students, all of whom would be taught with the Modern Learning Environments method, a new ''collaborative'' teaching method.
Rachelle Kilsby is co-ordinating the Fairfield School Fair on Saturday to raise money to furnish the new building.
The building itself would be paid for by the Ministry of Education, Mrs Kilsby said.
Mrs Kilsby was enthusiastic about MLE-style teaching because she said it was more collaborative.
While each class would have its own classroom, there would be many more opportunities for teachers to share duties based on what they were best at.
''It just means that we'll be able to try new practices; the teachers will be able to use their strengths more,'' she said.
''If one teacher's really good at something, they can take more of a leadership role.''
The design of the school, inside and out, was an important part of fostering that collaboration, she said.
Money raised at the fair could help buy desks, for example.
''Instead of children having an individual desk, they could have round tables they can work at,'' she said.
''It's so that we can have a new building with new things in it.''
The fair on Saturday, would have raffles, food, a magic show, and bouncy castles.
Mrs Kilsby was not sure how much money they would raise with the fair, but they were shooting high.
The goal was $20,000.
