Safe stolen from Caversham house

A safe containing cash and prescription medicine was "ripped out of the wall" of a Caversham house this morning, leaving a "big hole", police say.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said the Neville St home was entered via a window that was forced open.

Over $1000 was in the safe.

Police had identified suspects for the burglary and they were likely known to the victim, Snr Sgt Waru said.

"Somebody must have known it was there. There is nothing to indicate how they got it out of the wall," she said.

Inquiries were continuing.
