The former stables building in Crawford St, near the former Southern Tavern, was bought by Asia Pacific Hoperations.
Southern Capital project manager Lee Mullen said the building - records for which date back to 1874 - had been used for various purposes over the years, including most recently as a warehouse.
The building was practically abandoned when it was taken over and only a couple of items were being stored there.
''It's a challenging build but it's immensely satisfying to see it [the building] come back to life.''
Consent had been granted to demolish the brickwork and bluestone building in 2012 but those plans were not realised, Dunedin City Council heritage policy planner Glen Hazelton said.
