Rugby: Sunday night final on cards

Forsyth Barr Stadium is said to be a multipurpose venue and it will have to be if the cards fall in a particular way over the coming weekend.

With the ITM Cup semifinals set to be played this weekend, Otago still has a chance of hosting a final.

If it beats Wellington in the capital on Saturday night and Bay of Plenty defeats Hawkes Bay in Napier, Otago will host the final.

But with the Neil Diamond concert scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at the stadium, no rugby match can be played at the roofed venue that night or the day before.

The ITM Cup Championship final was scheduled to be played on the Friday night under the New Zealand Rugby schedule with the ITM Cup Premiership final set for the Saturday night.

If Otago does host the final, it will now be played on the Sunday night, October 25.

Otago Rugby Football Union general manager Richard Kinley said the issue of a possible clash at the venue had been raised as soon as the Neil Diamond concert was announced just under a year ago.

He said it was not possible to host the final on Friday night or Saturday night because of the concert. The venue would have seats on the ground.

It would take until Sunday night for the ground to be ready but playing it at night was more favourable for the broadcaster and he was confident of getting a good crowd in for the game.

With a public holiday the next day with Labour Day, a Sunday night final should be attractive. The ground should be in good condition following the concert.

A confirmation of the housing of the final would obviously only be made once the semifinals are played on Saturday.

Hawkes Bay is in the box seat, qualifying top of the Championship and having lost just once at home all season.

Otago last hosted a playoff game in 2013 when it lost to Hawkes Bay in an ITM Cup semifinal.
