Dangerous Mosgiel intersection is about to have safety improvements made to it.

Dunedin City Council network development and operations manager Michael Harrison said the council would be making safety improvements at the ''high-crash-rate intersection'' of Dukes Rd and Puddle Alley, about 2km northeast of Mosgiel.

The skewed angle of the intersection made motorists making a right turn from the slip lane turn their head in an awkward position to see if both directions were clear, Mr Harrison said.

The geometry to the south of the slip bay also made it difficult to get a good view of approaching traffic.

''The intent is to make that into a T-intersection, so there is only one intersection point.''

In the past five years, there had been eight crashes at the intersection. The most recent crash was in August.

''Six of the crashes involved traffic turning right from the Dukes Rd slip lane colliding with traffic travelling north on Puddle Alley, which is an 80kmh area.''

Most crashes had been minor but near misses were a regular occurrence, he said.

The council and police were concerned and safety improvements were required.

The changes would allow motorists to make better-informed decisions, he said.

Some immediate safety improvements included changing the ''give way'' intersection to a compulsory stop.

The improvements also included installing ''concealed intersection'' signage and trimming back vegetation in the area.

The short-term improvements would be completed this month and the layout changes were expected to take place this financial year, he said.

The 80kmh speed limit in Puddle Alley would remain.
