The future is so bright for Sprocket the Samoyed dog, he has to wear shades.

Loving nothing better than riding shotgun with his courier-driver owner, Ashley Brown (44), the prized pooch developed persistent eye problems as a result of sticking his head out the window.

"The dust was blowing in his eyes and causing all sorts of problems," Mr Brown said.

After spending hundreds of dollars on vet bills to fix the problem, Mr Brown decided what worked for him might work for his dog.

"I wear sunglasses, and when I found these doggy ones, I thought: 'Why not?"'

Initially sceptical of the $28 glasses, Mr Brown is now a convert as Sprocket's eye problem has cleared up since he began wearing them last month.

"He just loves them and people just think he is so cool wearing them."

During a recent delivery trip up Baldwin St, Mr Brown stopped his van six times at the request of tourists, who were keen to snap the sunglass-wearing Samoyed.

"We get a few funny looks. His appearance seems to make most people smile . . . and we get lots of people asking if he is real."

The sunglasses were popular with pig hunters wanting to protect their dogs' eyes from scratches, Mr Brown said.

The glasses were so useful, he was to purchase some for his 5-month-old Samoyed bitch: "She will probably want to ride up front with us, but with Sprocket up there it is a bit crowded."
