Rugby: 'Great preparation' shows in record win

Otago coach Cory Brown paid tribute to his players after his side's record win over Southland on Saturday night, but he is not getting ahead of himself.

Otago demolished Southland 61-7 at Forsyth Barr Stadium, a record winning margin in a fixture that dates back to 1887 and includes more the 230 games.

Otago did put 64 points on Southland in 1990 in Invercargill but Southland managed to score 15 points that day.

Otago also beat Southland 61-15 in 1994.

On Saturday night, all Southland had to show for itself was a try and a conversion, scored in the opening 10 minutes.

It was a distant second to a rampant Otago side.

Otago scored eight tries and first five-eighth Peter Breen helped himself to 26 points, as Otago lodged its biggest score since it put 65 points on Northland in 2003.

Brown said it was a great team performance, one he was extremely proud of.

''They all contributed, really. It was just outstanding. The principles of rugby were performed really well and everyone was up for it,'' he said.

''We had a really good training week. Great preparation and that showed. On the back of Wellington, that gave the boys a fair bit of belief in what they were doing.''

The side had got home in the last minute against Wellington but needed no late heroics on Saturday night, after leading 39-7 at the break.

Brown said his team had been making progress throughout the season.

''We've worked really hard on a lot of little things that we have wanted to improve on. It comes down to the players. They have been awesome all year.

"Even when we were losing matches, they would turn up on Monday with a smile on their face. The environment is really good and they just want to get better each week.''

Brown said the backs did well but that came from a solid platform up front.

He also praised the passing game of halfback Josh Renton.

''When he [Renton] is getting good ball and guys are cleaning out well, playing under the stadium you can play with speed and width and that is what we are trying to do.''

The play of skipper and hooker Liam Coltman and lock Tom Franklin helped the Otago forward pack get on top and Southland simply had no answer.

Brown said he did not have any strong feeling the side would go out and perform as well as they did, but it had come off a good training week.

''The week up to the game was pretty good. Just been doing those little one percenters.''

He said players were running into good form and the bench players made a big impact.

Otago does not have a long time to soak up the victory, as it takes on North Harbour on Thursday in Auckland.

''It is good to get the win but we have to focus on the next game. They [North Harbour] are playing really good rugby at the moment. They have a well balanced squad, good defensive line and they tackle pretty hard.''

The win puts Otago in the top four in the championship.

Manawatu beat North Harbour 31-17 on Saturday, while Counties-Manukau beat Tasman 42-33 in Pukekohe.

Yesterday, Taranaki beat Canterbury 24-21 and Wellington beat Waikato 21-14.
