More than 1000 people, including delighted parents, watched a series of lively performances in the opening session of the 22nd Otago Early Childhood and Schools' Maori and Pacific Island Festival (Polyfest) at the Edgar Centre, Dunedin, last night.

Festival trustee and co-chairwoman Pip Laufiso said an ''amazing'' standard of performance had been achieved at the latest Polyfest.

About 5000 pupils and volunteer helpers linked to Otago primary and secondary schools are taking part this week.

Pupils from several Dunedin schools performed yesterday, in one of the South Island's biggest arts and cultural events.

Dances will include the Maori haka and Samoan sasa.

The four-day festival continues at 9.30am today.
