The Clutha District Council yesterday created an eight-member group to push for ultra-fast broadband in the district.
The Clutha District Digital Plan steering group was formed and up to $91,050 in funding was approved for the group to register interest with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in bringing ultra-fast broadband to the district before October 28.
Yesterday's council meeting was called after Balclutha and Milton were listed among more than 110 towns not connected to ultra-fast broadband, which were possible contenders for the service when Communications Minister Amy Adams issued the request for proposals on September 1.
The list was created based on projected population sizes in 2023 and informed by council submissions.
Cr Hamish Anderson said ultra-fast broadband was crucial ''if we're going to attract people to the area''.
