The 16-year-old competed in the Australian Golden Gloves tournament in Brisbane last weekend and returned with a silver medal.
He fought accomplished Australian boxer Harry Price in the final of the 64kg youth category but was defeated. The points were not announced ringside but Hanan said the decision was fair.
''I felt like I had won the last round, because I started finding my mojo at the end. But I just left it too late,'' he saidHanan trains at the Olympic Gym in Mosgiel and while in Australia he impressed and picked up a new sponsor.
The year-12 John McGlashan College pupil started training when he was 9 or 10 but did not get into the ring for a competitive bout until he was 13.
Hanan will be making up for any lost time in the next few months. He is fighting in the Southland championships in Invercargill this weekend. The Canterbury championships are in two weeks and three weeks after that he will contest the nationals in Invercargill.
''I just love to fight but ultimately, I want to get to the top. I want to go to the Olympics one day. My main goal at the moment is the 2018 Commonwealth Games.''
