Police divers are still searching the Waikato River for signs of a man who was seen to fall from a bridge in Hamilton early this morning.
Divers arrived from Wellington to help with the search, and the police boat has been out for most of the day scouring the Waikato River north of Bridge St, Hamilton.
There were fears the man may be trapped under the surface of the river, said Sergeant Roderick Smart.
"We have already conducted a search of the river on foot and the search and rescue boat has also been out. But we have called the diving team in because of the depth and nature of the river."
The divers had not found anything by 7.30pm, and would continue searching until dark and then resume in the morning, a Hamilton police spokesman told NZPA.
Police wanted to hear from anyone who saw the man on the bridge between 1.10am and 1.25am, or from friends and relatives who may have realised he has gone missing.
The man is described as a dark skinned male in his early 20's, wearing clothing similar to black dress pants and a dark coloured shirt.
