Burglar trashes house but dishes done

A house-broken housebreaker has struck in Milton.

The as-yet unidentified burglar broke into a Moore St house last week and after creating a mess decided to clean up after themselves - somewhat, Senior Sergeant Liz Waru said.

After turning the house upside down, some time between Wednesday and Saturday, the intruder had cooked a meal and washed the resulting dishes.

''The whole house was trashed and turned upside down, but there are dishes which have been cleaned and washed on the bench,'' Snr Sgt Waru said.

Senior Constable Jim Jordan, of Milton, said police did not have any suspects but were ''leaning towards it being drunken idiots who have taken the opportunity to use someone's house while they were away''.

A bed had been slept in, an ''untidy search'' of the house had taken place, meals had been cooked and about $100 of groceries were missing from the house, he said.

It did not appear anything else was taken.

''It looks like they were looking for cash,'' he said.

The nature of the crime suggested the occupants were known to the intruder.

''It does suggest they have got some knowledge of the area and the people that live there,'' he said.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in or near Moore St from Wednesday to Saturday last week or with information that can help should contact police on 471-4800.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
