After eight years at the helm of Lake Wanaka Tourism, chief executive John Alldred announced his resignation yesterday, due to health reasons.

During his time at the regional tourism organisation, Mr Alldred set up the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre, which has grown into one of the most successful i-SITEs in the country.

He was also instrumental in starting the Sustainable Wanaka group, securing significant government funding for the sustainable tourism project, now regarded as a benchmark within the industry.

Mr Alldred also recognised the importance of event tourism, initiating the successful autumn Festival of Colour arts festival.

He also helped attract major sporting events, including the Challenge Wanaka iron-distance triathlon.

Under his leadership, Lake Wanaka Tourism became a strong voice in the international markets due to its integration with the Southern Lakes joint marketing alliance with Queenstown and Fiordland.

This gave Wanaka greater access to both emerging markets and established ones, helping increase international awareness and subsequent visitor numbers.

Lake Wanaka Tourism chairman Jon Davies said he regretted Mr Alldred's departure, but wished him the best for the future.

A replacement for Mr Alldred will be announced next year.
