Rugby: Christie able to contribute off field

This season just never got going for Shane Christie.

One of the Highlanders' best last year, the Tasman openside flanker had a hamstring which just never settled down this season.

Christie, who turns 30 next month, first injured the hamstring in the pre-season match against the Rebels.

It never came right as he tore his right hamstring three times and strained it a couple more times.

He feels back to full fitness now, but with no runs on the board in terms of playing time, he was never going to be considered for the semifinal against the Waratahs tonight.

''It has just been a gradual three-month process to get it right, just being smart and making sure it does not go again,'' he said.

''It has been frustrating. But it is just the way it goes. I have still been able to contribute in other ways. I enjoy being part of the team.''

Christie has two club games and last week the injury curse struck again as he was forced off the field with a nasty cut to his shin.

He was philosophical about the season which never got started, but pointed out it was not over yet.

''A lot of boys miss out through injury and not being selected. But we have a good team culture and we are all on the same page. Whether you play or not, we still have a big part to play.''

He said the feeling among the side was positive and the Highlanders were looking forward to the match.

''We've just had a good build-up, just nailing what we are training. Their weaknesses are our strengths.''

He will return to Tasman for the upcoming ITM Cup, hoping for the Makos to go one better than the final last season.
