Rugby: Hurricanes lead Chiefs at half-time

Two quick tries have seen the Hurricanes take a 14-13 lead in their final round-robin game of this year's Super Rugby competition.

After trailing 13-0 35 minutes in, the Hurricanes were able to get some good field position and made it count, turning down three shots at goal to apply pressure which eventually told. Julian Savea found himself in space on the wing and despite being unable to finish, his team was awarded a penalty try, as Tom Marshall was deemed to have shoulder charged Savea in his cover defence.

Savea found himself in space again almost straight away, making a strong run up the left wing to put the Hurricanes in another good position. After being awarded a penalty, they kicked for the line and James Marshall scythed through a gap close-in from the lineout, before linking with Conrad Smith to score.

It had been the Chiefs who were on top up until that point however, scoring a somewhat lucky intercept try after a messy start in the 15th minute, before making a couple of strong surges into the opposition half.

The game remains in a good position for the Highlanders, with the Chiefs needing to beat the Hurricanes by 38 points in the second half to wrestle the home playoff match from the southern franchise.
