Premier club rugby was played in the worst conditions of the season, but Southern produced a top defensive effort to defeat University A 11-5 in the V.G Cavanagh Memorial at Bathgate Park today.

Nathan Cargo scored the crucial try for Southern which was set up by a storming run by prop Mike Mata'afa and a pop pass from Tei Walden. University A then scored through centre Matt Faddes, who fended off a tackler to crash over in the corner.

In the other games, Dunedin scored late to beat Alhambra-Union 7-5, Taieri repelled a tenacious Kaikorai side 33-13, Harbour beat Zingari-Richmond 19-0 and Pirates banked a bonus point in its 31-0 win against Green Island.
