Rugby: SOHS makes it 3 from 3

The boys from Balclutha have maintained their perfect start to the season.

The South Otago High School First XV made it three wins from as many games in the premier schools competition with a 39-22 win over St Kevin's in Balclutha on Saturday.

The host side led 26-10 at halftime but coach Adam Whaanga said St Kevin's provided more resistance than the score suggested.

''The score probably flattered us a little bit, I reckon, in the first half,'' he said.

Fullback Rory van Vugt stood out in the first half along with the South Otago midfield, while No8 Sam Fischli played well above his weight in defence.

''They did have some big boys and he's only an 85 90kg No8 and he put in big hits,'' Whaanga said.

St Kevin's coach Justin Fowler said his side simply could not get enough territory.

''I think we got into their 22m five times and scored four tries, but it was a bit hard trying to get down there.''

All of St Kevin's' tries came through its front row, with giant prop Paea Palaa smashing through for three of them and Josh Klenner getting the other.

''We gave them too many points in the first half and they played very well,'' Fowler said.

Waitaki Boys' High School gained a bonus point 32-22 win over King's High School in an interschool earlier in the week that doubled as a competition game.

In Saturday's other games, John McGlashan College dismantled Taieri College 61-0, the Otago Boys' Second XV also remained unbeaten after three rounds with a 28-8 win win over Mount Aspiring College, and Dunstan High School beat Kavanagh College 32-26.

South Otago and the Otago Boys' Second XV meet next week in Dunedin in a top of the table clash.
