Rugby: Set piece, rolling mauls keys

It has been a bit of a no-brainer for the Highlanders this week.

They conceded three tries from rolling mauls last week, and South African sides are lying in wait, so it is obvious what needs some work: set piece, combatting big forwards and shutting down those nasty rolling mauls.

Coach Jamie Joseph admitted as much before his side's game against the Sharks at Forsyth Barr Stadium tonight.

''You do not really have to think much about what we have been working on this week. We have confidence in our backline to score tries as long as we give them relatively good ball,'' he said.

''We let ourselves down in that area [rolling mauls] last week and we know we are going to get it for the next three or four weeks because the Force do it as well. We just have to be better than that.

''We have combatted that up until last weekend. We were poor on that last game and we have worked on it this week. I have got confidence in our forwards to get it done.''

Joseph said the side was bruised after last week's disappointing loss to the Brumbies and had been honest about the aspects of the effort.

''There was some real critical feedback on Monday and Tuesday this week following that loss and I know the guys are really hurting from that.

''Every game is crucial, every week now. We were disappointed to lose to the Brumbies. But every time we have lost this year, we have bounced back and won. So, hopefully, we can do that again this week.''

The Highlanders will seek to move the ball around although the Sharks have some classy backs in the likes of Lwazi Mvovo and Odwa Ndungane.

With all the All Blacks back and a firm track guaranteed, the home team will look to keep the ball alive. But it can only do that if it cuts out the sloppy errors which damaged its game last week.

There were too many knock-ons and inaccurate passes for the Highlanders to get anywhere near a victory and they have to be eliminated for the side to be in the contest.

Confidence will be on the rise with the return of the All Blacks, although much will rest on the shoulders of first five-eighth Lima Sopoaga. He had a game to forget last week but Joseph has plenty of confidence in his No 10.

''He has been part of the Super rugby franchise for five years and he is just maturing nicely. I'm really pleased how he is going. He is a really good leader of our game plan.

"The boys are playing well and that is a good reflection of how our 10 is going. He just needs to prepare well and look after himself.''

This is the final game of the season at Forsyth Barr Stadium, although the Highlanders play a game in Invercargill at the end of the month.

Joseph wants to go out with a bang.

''We are hoping for a big match. I don't think we have let down the crowd when we have played here at the stadium.''

With the side getting on a plane to South Africa on Sunday, the long trip to Johannesburg will be a lot better with a fresh win in the back pocket.
