Two drivers were killed in a head-on collision in New Plymouth this afternoon.
Police said emergency services were called to Devon Rd after they were contacted by a member of the public about 1.45pm.
First aid was given to the two female drivers, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Both were the sole occupants of their vehicles, and their deaths had been referred to the coroner.
Police said they would not release the names of the deceased until formal identification was completed and next of kin had been informed.
A scene examination was underway, and police and the serious crash unit was investigating the cause of the crash.
Devon Rd remains closed and motorists have been advised diversions are in place.
