It is amazing what a win will do.

The Alexandra Rugby Football Club will celebrate its 125th birthday this weekend and a big crowd is set to gather for the festivities.

Organising committee chairman Lindsay Breen said after the senior side had a good win over Arrowtown last week, registrations had surged ahead for the celebrations.

There was a crowd of about 300 due to come to the festivities and Breen said everyone was looking forward to the weekend's events.

It will start with registration on Friday night before a full programme of events on Saturday.

These include photos, junior games and a match against long-time rival Matakanui Combined at Molyneux Park.

No games can start until after 1pm because of Anzac Day.

A dinner on Saturday night will include a conversation with former All Blacks Joe Stanley, Mike Brewer and John Timu.

A team of Alexandra club greats will be named along with an auction of club jerseys.

A painting by Wanaka artist Denis Kent will also be auctioned.

Breen said the late registrations were mostly from locals, and people from all over New Zealand were coming to the event.

The club has had one All Black Bill Lunn, in 1949, while another All Black, Tom Lynch, was believed to have played for the club as a youngster.

He represented Canterbury and the Marist club in Christchurch when he played for the All Blacks in 1951. He later moved to rugby league in England.

The Alexandra club has had many Otago representatives over the years - last year's midfield back Jayden Spence played for the club when at primary school.

John Breen, Lindsay's father, has updated the club's history book from 25 years ago when the century mark was brought up and a new version has been created.
