Hearings scheduled to be held at the Humber St facility last week were adjourned until March 18 while air quality tests were carried out, after staff reported a chemical smell near the toilets in the staff section of the facility and were subsequently unwell.
Work to fix the issue was under way, but Ministry of Justice district courts general manager Tony Fisher said the facility would not be ready for next week's list day.
Criminal court hearings on March 18 will be held at the Oamaru Opera House, where they were held for two years after being held for a period in Timaru following the closure of the town's historic court house in 2011 when it was ruled earthquake prone.
Mr Fisher said work was being carried out to install additional venting, but it was not expected to be completed until next week.
''We are also waiting on the results of air quality testing and we don't want to schedule any more hearings at the facility until we have those results.''
The Ministry of Justice is expecting to receive the results later next week.
''When the hearings facility was closed, I said the health and safety of everyone who uses our courts is of paramount importance. That has not changed,'' Mr Fisher said.
''I'd like to thank all court users, the judiciary, lawyers, police and Corrections staff for their patience and their work in ensuring next week's list day can still go ahead.''
